Wood Richardson proved the perfect print partner for independent author Phil Ogden when he entrusted them with the print of his new botanical book ‘Ogden’s Garden’. Recognised as one of the leading suppliers of in-house print and production services in the U.K., the York based printers used a combination of digital and litho print to bring to life the spectacular finished book.
Using original artwork, ‘Ogden’s Garden’ represents a visual celebration of some of the plants from Phil’s own garden and combines the author’s two great loves – art and horticulture. To create the best result, Wood Richardson printed the covers in full colour with an overall sealer, using their B2 Heidelberg Speedmaster litho press on 350gsm Silk Art. The inner pages were printed digitally in full colour, using the Reel-Fed, Xeikon digital press, using 160gsm Pro-design offset – a smooth uncoated paper that held the vibrant image colours well and added a nice texture to the pages.
Andrew Ingram, Sales Manager, Wood Richardson said: “It was important to get the balance right between high definition print to bring out the stunning imagery and a textured feel to make the book easy to handle and enjoy. Phil was keen to work with us and take our advice, which resulted in finding the very best solution for the job – a litho and digital combination. This is a great example of how we like to work with our clients to achieve the result they all want whilst offering our ideas to create the perfect solution.”
Wood Richardson was chosen as print partner further to a personal recommendation. Phil Ogden said: “I was keen to see if Wood Richardson could help me to produce my own ‘Limited Edition’ book which I wanted to have a sophisticated ‘coffee-table’ feel, using the best top quality materials and, of course, at a reasonable price.
“I found Sales Manager, Andrew Ingram, to be extremely knowledgeable and very helpful in suggesting some specific paper materials, laminations and contemporary digital printing methods which, he thought, would meet my requirements exactly. I was after a particular look and style of printing which, of course, had to match the print quality I had already achieved in my artwork and, after a series of detailed printing tests, which included the expert cooperation of Jason Parker from the Wood Richardson Design department. I wanted to produce something which fulfilled my aims of being tactile, beautiful, uplifting to look through and is unique. I wasn’t disappointed.”
The self-publishing industry has progressed over recent years and is often the preferred first port of call for a budding author to test the market and gauge demand for their book. And this trend is continuing, with signs of continued growth and innovation in years to come. Today, independent writers have to take ownership of their role both as authors and business owners and Phil Ogden is no exception. With a series of fairs and exhibitions planned over the coming months to promote his book and with 120 of the initial 150 print run already sold, it looks likely that Wood Richardson’s services will be called upon once again for a reprint!
